CAREER PATHS

There are many career paths in the finishing trades industry.

DC 57 bridge painters work on many of western Pennsylvania’s thousands of bridges. From stripping the old paint to applying the new coating, bridge painters are essential to maintaining the health and safety of our bridges. You’ll receive top tier training to do this crucial work safely and efficiently.

As an Industrial Painter, you’ll learn the skills and techniques required to apply paint to a variety of materials and surfaces. You’ll learn to operate complex power tools and other heavy equipment. Apprentices in both of the IUPAT painting crafts often require a creative touch for the restoration of historic buildings.
As a Commercial Painter, you’ll use a trained eye to paint walls, ceilings, doors and doorframes, using brushes, rollers, and spray guns, as laid out in the work plan or specification. Wallcoverers learn to prepare wall surfaces and apply wallpaper, vinyl and fabric coverings and murals.
As a Drywall Finisher, or taper as they are sometimes known, you will prepare unfinished interior drywall panels for painting. You could be working on offices in a skyscraper, or the interior of homes in a new neighborhood development.
As an Architectural Glass and Metal Installer, or a Glazier as they’re known, you will learn to select, cut, install and replace all types of glass for a variety of buildings and structures. Our commercial work includes everything from storefront windows, to the “curtain wall” of glass covering the tallest of skyscrapers across North America.
